The calculators on this site
For home pools, Calculator Pool works out doses and gallons. A calculator asks only for the essentials. Then it answers in the units of the jug or bag you buy.
Subjects covered: pool volume, chemical dosing, pool pump sizing, pool heater sizing and pool running costs.
The math behind the answers
Each calculation is set out on the methods page. The CDC recommends keeping pH from 7.2 to 7.8. The Trouble Free Pool chart sets free chlorine for each stabilizer level. Every target appears together on one page in the levels chart.
Each dose is based on the label strength of ordinary products: liquid chlorine at 12.5% or 10%, cal-hypo at 65%, muriatic acid at 31.45%. With a big dose, pour in part, let the pump circulate it, and test the water before adding the rest.
How a dose is worked out
Take a 14,000 gallon pool with pH at 7.8 and alkalinity at 100 ppm. The pH calculator works out the acid needed to reach 7.5: 13 fl oz (380 mL) of muriatic acid. The answer then tells you to pour half, run the pump, and test before adding the rest.
Each answer also carries its safety line. Acid goes into water, never water into acid. Acid and chlorine never go in together. After a routine dose of liquid chlorine, wait about 30 minutes and test: swim once free chlorine is back in its range.
